CUTTING - SELF MUTILATION

Cutting is a type of self injury where a person cuts or mutilates themselves in some way in order to gain psychological relief.  Most of the time, cutting is not considered a suicide attempt, and these two can be differentiated.

A cutter rationalizes that their pain will go away when they cut.  While it may feel this way, the pain of cutting is only serving to temporarily mask the underlying problem, as it is merely an attempt to substitute physical pain for psychological pain.  Cutters often feel isolated and don't feel they can get help anywhere else.

As the condition worsens and the problems are not resolved, significant deteriorations in functioning will more often than not result from not seeking help.  Cutters will begin to see their relationships, family life, school, or work suffer as they continue to attempt to escape from dealing with their emotions.

If you are cutting, take a moment to ask yourself whether this is really helping.  If you are honest with yourself, you will know that this type of behavior is not the answer.  Seeking help from a qualified professional is a great start to the road to recovery.
